Spouses must live together in kindness, and the wife must obey her husband. If she raises her voice or addresses him with inappropriate words, without cursing, insulting, or hitting, he is not to hit her; rather, he should admonish her. However, if she assaults him with cursing, insulting, or hitting, he may discipline her with non-brutal hitting. Cursing is not considered 'nushuz' (marital disobedience), but it does warrant discipline.
