What is the ruling on someone who is affected by the Quranic verses he hears in the mosque or at home, such that he rejoices at a verse of mercy or remembers his sins at a verse of punishment? Is this a message from Allah to His servant? And how can he be assured of Allah's pleasure and mercy?

What you do, delaying entry with the Imam upon hearing a verse about punishment, is a wrong action that hinders you from goodness and hastening to prayer. Hearing verses of punishment should be an incentive to initiate good deeds and to flee to Allah, for the Quran was revealed as insights and guidance for people, containing both promise and warning, which helps hearts in their journey to Allah. Knowing Allah's pleasure with certainty is only achieved in the hereafter. In this world, the believer hopes and fears, and performs good deeds and has good expectations of his Lord, knowing that there is no salvation except by His grace and mercy. For the servant, there is a sign by which he can largely surmise his standing with his Lord, which is to look at how much Allah's standing is with him, for: "Whoever wishes to know his standing with Allah, let him look at how Allah's standing is with him."
