What is the expiation for my mother not completing the waiting period (iddah) after my father's death, based on an incorrect fatwa that a pregnant woman has no iddah?
The waiting period () for a pregnant widow ends upon delivery, as Allah Almighty says: "And for those who are pregnant, their term is when they deliver their burdens." The evidence for this is the agreed-upon of Subai'ah Al-Aslamiyah, where the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, ruled that she became lawful (for marriage) when she delivered her burden and commanded her to marry if she wished. If the mother has delivered her burden, her waiting period has ended, and the intention to observe the iddah is not a condition. If she commits any of the prohibitions of mourning, she must repent and seek forgiveness, and she is not required to make up for the iddah.
