Linguistically, i’jaz means to outstrip or to precede. The inimitability (i’jaz) of the Quran is its challenge to humankind and jinn to produce a surah like it, as stated in verse 88 of Surat Al-Isra. A miracle (mu'jizah) is an extraordinary event performed by Allah through His prophets to confirm their truthfulness. As for sarfah, its meaning is to turn something away from its intended course. Those who advocate for this view in this context believe that Allah averted people's intentions from opposing the Quran. This is a specious opinion, as it implies that the Quran is not inherently miraculous.
