Allah has permitted the believer to marry a chaste, virtuous woman. He has also clarified that a believing female servant is better than a polytheist, the reason being that polytheists invite to the Fire. Allah has made an exception among polytheist women for the People of the Book (Jewish and Christian women), provided they are chaste. If she is not chaste, then marrying her is not permissible.

It is preferable for a Muslim to marry a Muslim woman to raise children upon Islam and to avoid the influence of a Kitabiyyah (woman from the People of the Book) on the children's beliefs and conduct. At present, the matter is even more serious regarding Jewish women due to the cunning of the Jews and their use of their women to spy on Muslim societies.

If a Muslim man marries a Kitabiyyah, she is not obligated to embrace Islam, but the husband should encourage her towards it. If the Kitabiyyah wife desires to embrace Islam, she must bear witness to "There is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah," and disavow the beliefs of the Christians that contradict monotheism. Then, she must commit to prayer and learn Al-Fatiha.
