What is the ruling concerning the divorce issued by an addict who is aware of what he is saying, if he divorces his wife three times on three different occasions while under the influence of drugs?

Repeating the divorce three times necessitates a major separation (baynunah kubra), meaning the wife is not permissible for her first husband until she marries another man—a marriage of genuine desire, not for the purpose of making her permissible (tahlil)—and then he either divorces her or dies, and her waiting period (iddah) concludes. The husband should hasten to repent from drug use.
