Must the former fiancée compensate her ex-fiancé for a lost gold bracelet during the engagement, either with its value as stated in the invoice, or by buying a new bracelet of the same weight, or of the same value as stated in the invoice?

The gold given by the suitor to his fiancée as part of the dowry, known as "al-Shabaka" (the engagement gift), must be returned to the suitor if the engagement is broken. This is because she is not entitled to any part of the dowry before the marriage contract is concluded. Custom dictates that the gold is held by the fiancée as a loan. Therefore, if any of it remains in its original state, it must be returned in kind. If some of it is lost, then a similar item must be returned. If a similar item is not available, then its value at the time of loss must be returned.
