What is the ruling on disposing of a gold necklace that a young man gifted to a girl with whom he had an illicit relationship, then she cut ties with him and became engaged to another person, and is it permissible to sell it and dispose of its price?
Acquaintance and love relationships between young men and women are a gateway to evil and corruption, and one must repent and beware of being complacent in them. A gift given with the intention of continuing an illicit relationship is not permissible, and one must dispose of it by spending it on charitable causes. However, if the gift was like a suitor's gift to his fiancée, and not for the purpose of an unlawful relationship, then the most preponderant opinion is that it should be returned to him due to the cessation of the reason for which it was given, for every gift or grant has a reason that is established when the reason is established and ceases when it ceases.
