It is permissible to marry a chaste woman of the People of the Book, but marrying a Muslim woman is preferable. It is not permissible to solemnize a marriage contract in a church. If the woman is married to a Muslim man, it is not lawful to marry her until her marriage to the first husband is dissolved by divorce or annulment. If her first marriage was valid, it is not lawful to marry a woman who is already married to another man. If it was invalid, she is not permitted to leave it except by divorce from her husband or an annulment overseen by a Muslim judge. The statement of the priest is of no account, and the woman's claim that there is no need to inquire about her first marriage is incorrect.
