Magianism is a Persian word applied to followers of a dualistic polytheistic religion that posits two gods: one of good and one of evil. Scholars have differed on whether they are People of the Book or not. The majority view is that they are not, and they are treated like People of the Book only in matters of jizya (tribute), based on their being coupled with idolaters in Quranic verses that do not mention them alongside the People of the Book who are rewarded for their faith and good deeds. Conversely, others maintain that they are People of the Book who altered and distorted their scripture, citing the hadith, "Treat them according to the sunnah of the People of the Book," and the collection of jizya from them. Their beliefs revolve around the intermingling of light and darkness and the liberation of light from it. They also believe in the transmigration of souls and the uninterrupted continuation of prophecy. Some Arab tribes were influenced by Magianism due to their proximity to the Sassanian state. It remained prevalent in some Islamic regions after the conquest and had an impact on the emergence of esoteric movements like Babism and Baha'ism. It also influenced the beliefs of extremist Shi'ites, such as the return (raj'a), transmigration of souls, and claims of prophethood and divinity.
