The Majus (Zoroastrians) are a dualistic, pagan Persian religion that believes in two gods: one of good and one of evil. Scholars have differed on the reason for their naming and whether they are People of the Book or not. The majority of scholars hold that they are not People of the Book, citing Quranic verses that differentiate them from the People of the Book. Others, however, have argued that they were People of the Book who altered and distorted their scripture, citing the hadith: "Treat them as you treat the People of the Book." Mazdaism influenced some Arab tribes due to their proximity to the Sasanian Empire, and its impact was evident in the esoteric movements that arose in their regions, particularly in the beliefs of rajʿa (return), tanasukh (transmigration of souls), and claims of prophethood and divinity.
