Tawriya (ambiguous speech) is permissible when needed to alleviate hardship, but excessive use of it can lead to lying and a loss of trust between people, especially between spouses. A woman's looking at a man is permissible if it is devoid of lust and temptation; otherwise, averting the gaze is necessary, except when there is a need. Excessive swearing is blameworthy. The intention of the swearer is what matters in an oath, unless it is someone authorized to administer oaths, such as a judge.
