What is the ruling of Islamic law regarding papers that compel Muslims to write and distribute a certain number of copies, promising happiness and wealth to those who comply and threatening poverty and death to those who neglect them, especially given that they proliferated after the offense to the Prophet and contain distorted Quranic verses?

It appears that the originators of these messages intended to encourage people to do good and deter them from evil, but they erred by using an invalid means: promising and threatening people with things that only Allah possesses. Allah has forbidden fabrication and speaking about Him without knowledge, in addition to turning away from the prophetic guidance in warning people with revelation and gladdening them with Allah's promise. Allah Almighty says: "Say, 'I only warn you by revelation,'" and "Say, 'If I should err, I would only err to the detriment of myself; but if I should be guided, it is by what my Lord reveals to me.'" Therefore, participating in the dissemination and distribution of these papers is prohibited.
