What is the Sharia ruling on giving a place for reading, free of charge, from zakat money?
Source: FtawySummary from Ftawy's records · added here Oct 24, 2026
It is not permissible to give to a tenant and deduct it as rent for two reasons: First, the zakat payer is not allowed to stipulate anything from the recipient of the zakat that benefits the zakat payer. Second, zakat was legislated to meet the basic needs of the poor, and preparing places for reading is not among these needs. If the zakat payer does so, their zakat is not valid, and they must re-issue it.
