What is the ruling on raising dogs in apartments?

It is not permissible to raise dogs except for hunting or guarding, due to what was authentically reported from the Prophet, may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him: "Whoever keeps a dog, except a dog for herding livestock or a dog for hunting, his reward will be diminished by a qirat each day." They must also be kept outside the house to avoid defiling it and causing the angels to depart.
