Is it permissible to buy ornamental birds to enjoy their sounds and colors?
Selling ornamental birds such as parrots, colorful birds, and nightingales for their voices is permissible because looking at them and listening to their voices is a permissible purpose, and no text has been reported to prohibit that. Rather, there is evidence that it is permissible to keep them confined if they are fed and watered. This is indicated by the hadith of Anas: "O Abu 'Umair, what did the Nughair (small bird) do?", and the hadith of the woman who entered Hellfire because of a cat she confined. Some scholars have considered keeping them confined undesirable or prohibited, deeming it a form of extravagance or foolishness.
