What is the ruling on keeping ornamental birds at home?

It is permissible to keep ornamental fish and birds, and pet animals, for a good purpose, such as contemplating God's creations and enjoying their beauty, or for the amusement of children. It has been authenticated that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, used to ask Abu Umayr about his little bird, which indicates the permissibility of keeping birds confined. One must be kind to the confined animal by feeding it and giving it water, as the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "A woman entered the Hellfire because of a cat she tied up; she neither fed it nor let it eat from the vermin of the earth."
