What is the way to get rid of the whispers of showing off (riyaa'), especially after suffering from the whispers of death and purity, knowing that the questioner tries to hide her good deeds for fear of showing off, and feels afraid of being a show-off when the whispers of showing off sometimes fade away from her?
Deal with the fear of showing off (riya') as a whisper (waswasa), for it is a sign of sincerity, and Satan intends by it to weaken you from performing good deeds. Turn away from that and direct your actions to Allah, and do not preoccupy yourself with people's praise. Know that people's praise for good deeds is an immediate glad tiding for the believer, as was narrated from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him.
And recite frequently the prophetic supplication: "O Allah, we seek refuge in You from associating anything with You knowingly, and we seek Your forgiveness for what we do not know."
