What is the ruling on reading the exegesis of the Qur’an during prayer?

The worshipper should look into the interpretation of verses outside of prayer. However, during prayer, jurists consider reading from books to be reprehensible. There is no harm in looking at the interpretation within the mus'haf (Qur'an) without reciting verbally, provided that it does not involve excessive movement that would invalidate the prayer. Imam An-Nawawi said: "If one looks at something written other than the Qur'an, and repeats what is in it to himself, his prayer is not invalidated, even if it takes a long time. However, it is reprehensible." In summary, prayer is not invalidated by looking at a mus'haf that contains an interpretation of the Qur'an without verbal recitation, but rather by looking at the meaning. Nevertheless, it is preferable for one to avert their gaze from all of that and to concentrate on the prayer.
