The removal of impurities (urine or feces) from the two excretory passages can be done in three ways:

1. Combining stones (or what takes their place) and water. This is the best method for thorough cleansing.

2. Using only stones (or what takes their place).

3. Using only water.

Wiping with stones is sufficient as long as the impurity has not spread beyond its usual place. If it has spread, washing with water becomes obligatory. It is permissible to suffice with water only, using the hand. It is also permissible to remove the impurity solely with stones, tissues, or similar cleansing materials.
