Does my purchase of expensive perfumes count as extravagance?

Good scents and perfumes are among the adornments of this world, and they were made beloved to the Prophet, peace be upon him. Buying expensive perfumes is not considered extravagance except in certain cases: if one does not own the money, or if the intention is to show off, or if one uses an excessive amount without need.

There is no doubt that perfume is beloved, and if its use does not exceed its proper bounds, then there is no extravagance in it. However, if someone brings a large quantity of perfume and allows it to evaporate throughout the gathering without needing it, then this is extravagance.

Extravagance in customs is a relative matter. It might be considered extravagance for one group but not for another. Extravagance is defined as exceeding the limit. Buying expensive perfume for a wealthy person is not considered extravagance, unlike for those of moderate means or the poor.
