Is extravagance in perfume permissible, and what is the amount of it prescribed in the Sunnah?

The Prophet, peace be upon him, loved perfume from worldly things. This is mentioned in the noble Hadith: "From your world, women and perfume have been made beloved to me, and the coolness of my eyes has been made in prayer." The reason for his love of perfume is his communion with the angels who love good scents. As for extravagance in perfume and other things, it is blameworthy and forbidden, due to the Almighty's saying: "And eat and drink, but be not excessive. Indeed, He likes not those who commit excess" (Quran 7:31), and the Prophet's saying, peace be upon him: "Eat, give charity, and wear (clothes), without extravagance or pride." The required amount of perfume varies according to need and the user's situation.
