On what occasion did the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say: "I am free of any Muslim who resides among the polytheists." They said: "O Messenger of Allah, why?" He said: "Their fires should not be visible to each other"?

Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi, and Nasa'i narrated that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, sent a raiding party to Khath'am. When they hastened to kill after some people had sought refuge by prostrating, the Prophet ordered them to pay half the blood money and said: "I am innocent of any Muslim who resides among the polytheists." He was asked, "Why is that?" He replied, "Their fires should not be visible to one another." This hadith (definition) is not in Sahih (definition) Muslim.
