Does the Prophet’s — may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him — saying, "Do not reside with the polytheists and do not associate with them," include relatives, such as disbelieving parents who do not openly declare their disbelief before their son, in the case of living with them?

The meaning of the hadith becomes clear by knowing its reason, which is a Muslim residing among polytheists. The Prophet sent a detachment to Khath'am, and when the killing spread rapidly among those who sought refuge in prostration, the Prophet disavowed every Muslim who resided among polytheists, and ordered half the blood money for them. The hadith indicates the dislike of residing among polytheists, and does not include cohabiting with disbelieving parents in Muslim lands, for honoring them is obligatory.
