Banu Hashim are the sons of Hashim ibn Abd Manaf, and they are: Asad, Sayfi, Nadlah, and Abd al-Muttalib. The lineage of Hashim was confined to the ten sons of Abd al-Muttalib. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, allocated a share to Banu Hashim and Banu al-Muttalib, but not to Banu Abd Shams and Banu Nawfal, because they were considered as one. As for the mawali (freed slaves) of the Prophet's household, they are their freedmen.
