The question

Who are the Ahl al-Bayt: Banu Hashim or Banu al-Muttalib? And what is the difference between them? And why is it said that the Ahl al-Bayt are Banu Hashim and Banu al-Muttalib, even though Abd al-Muttalib was a descendant of Hashim?

The answer

Al-Muttalib is not 'Abd al-Muttalib. Al-Muttalib is the full brother of Hashim, while 'Abd al-Muttalib is the son of Hashim. Therefore, Al-Muttalib is the uncle of 'Abd al-Muttalib. The People of the House (Ahl al-Bayt) are the Banu Hashim and the Banu Al-Muttalib, and not the Banu 'Abd Shams nor the Banu Nawfal. The proof for this is the Prophet's (peace be upon him) statement: "Indeed, the Banu Hashim and the Banu Al-Muttalib are one and the same."
