Is it permissible to remove the niqab—which I believe to be obligatory—due to the unavailability of marriage opportunities and the rejection of some job opportunities for those who wear it, along with the fear that the niqab may be misunderstood because of this removal?
The obligation for a woman to cover her face from non- men is a matter of scholarly disagreement, but the predominant view is that it is obligatory. As long as the questioner believes and is convinced of the obligation of the niqab, she is not permitted to remove it except out of necessity or a need that is treated as such. Marriage does not justify its removal, as sustenance and provision are predetermined. As for removing it to obtain employment, this varies according to the situation and need. The concession is granted to one who is poor and finds no means of livelihood except through work that stipulates the removal of the-niqab.
