If he died having abandoned prayer, should he be shrouded?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

Whoever abandons prayer, denying its obligation, is an infidel with major disbelief, by agreement of the scholars. He is not to be washed, nor shrouded, nor prayed over, nor buried in Muslim cemeteries, and his wealth is to be spent for the benefit of Muslims. As for whoever abandons it due to laziness and negligence, while acknowledging its obligation, the scholars differ concerning him: some consider him to have committed major disbelief, while others — and they are the majority — consider his disbelief to be minor, not expelling him from the faith. Thus, he is to be washed, shrouded, prayed over, and buried in Muslim cemeteries.
