Is it permissible to give zakat to a poor fiancée to help her complete her studies and prepare herself for marriage?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

It is not permissible for a person to give his Zakat to those whose maintenance is obligatory upon him. The fiancée and her family are not among those whose maintenance is obligatory upon the suitor; therefore, he may give Zakat to them if they are poor. If Zakat is given to her, it becomes her property to spend on her needs, such as studies or wedding preparations, provided that the Zakat is not a substitute for things that the husband must provide. If a person takes possession of money through lawful means, he may dispose of it as he wishes. It is permissible to assist in marriage from Zakat funds in a reasonable manner and without extravagance.
