What is the ruling regarding a man divorcing his wife by saying three times, "You are divorced, divorced, divorced, divorced, and you have become unlawful to me," and then regretting it and wishing to take her back?

The husband's statement to his wife, "You are divorced," is an explicit divorce, and according to the majority of scholars, divorce takes effect by it without the need for intention. If he repeats the word of divorce with the intention of effecting three divorces, then all three take effect. However, if he repeats it for emphasis and did not intend to effect three divorces, then only one takes effect. Some scholars, like Ibn Taymiyyah, do not consider consecutive divorces before a رجعة (revocation) or a new marriage contract as more than a single divorce. As for his statement, "You have become unlawful to me," it appears to be an announcement of the outcome after he pronounced the three divorces. If he intended to create a ruling by it, then its effect depends on his intention of prohibition.
