Will Allah admit a Muslim or a person to Hellfire because of an animal, and can one who intentionally runs over a cat or does not care for it enter Hellfire?
This is authentic and agreed upon, and the reason for the woman's entry into Hellfire was her torturing of the cat by imprisoning and starving it until it died. This Hadith has been narrated with similar wordings by a number of companions.
'Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) raised an issue regarding the tormented woman being a Muslim, but it appears that her statement was an exercise of (independent reasoning), and a number of companions disagreed with her. Whether the woman was a disbeliever or a Muslim, she was tormented because of what she did to the cat. It is inferred from the Hadith that harming and torturing animals necessitates torment in Hellfire. There are also severe prohibitions against torturing animals and using them as targets for shooting. Let the Muslim beware of intentionally harming animals, and let him repent from that.
