How can a young man who outwardly adheres to Islam be saved, but suffers from not lowering his gaze from immodestly dressed women due to excessive mixing in his studies and transportation?

Looking at foreign women is forbidden, especially if done with lust, as Allah Almighty says: "Tell the believing men to reduce [some] of their vision and guard their private parts. That is purer for them." And the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Do not follow a glance with another glance." Whoever claims that looking at women is not forbidden has slandered Allah, because deeming lawful what Allah has forbidden, or deeming forbidden what He has made lawful, is among the causes of apostasy. To help lower one's gaze, marriage is recommended, or fasting for those who cannot afford marriage, as guided by the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him.

Among the most important aids to lowering one's gaze are: 1. Staying away from bad company. 2. Being mindful of Allah Almighty in secret and in public. 3. Remembering the delights of Paradise and the Houris. 4. Frequently reading books on encouragement and discouragement ( الترغيب والترهيب ) and reciting the Quran with contemplation.

If a person is compelled to study in a mixed-gender university, it is permissible under certain conditions: attending only necessary lectures, avoiding looking at and speaking with women, not sitting close to them, choosing righteous company, and frequently seeking forgiveness and performing good deeds. However, if one fears falling into temptation and weakening of faith, it is better to leave the study, for nothing is comparable to safety. Whoever gives up something for the sake of Allah, He will compensate him with something better. And sustenance is in the hands of Allah.
