What is the ruling on being named: Dean Muhammad?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

Scholars disliked naming with this name due to the self-praise it implies and the ill-omen it might cause if its existence is denied. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, changed the names of some of his Companions due to self-praise or fear of ill-omen.

It is disliked to name with ugly names, names that imply self-praise, or names that lead to ill-omen; for instance, if one asks: "Is he 'Athm' (sin)?" and the answer is: "No."

It is considered reprehensible to say: "Din Muhammad" (Religion of Muhammad) is not present, if asked about a person named "Din Muhammad" who is not there.
