Is trying to remember sins and ask about them a good thing, or is it better to make a general repentance and start anew, even if the sins are related to acts of worship and rights?

Every human being is a sinner, and many may not be aware of many of their sins. Therefore, they must repent of all their sins with a general repentance that includes regret for all sins and a firm resolve to be righteous and avoid committing evil. This is because the sins a servant is unaware of are more numerous than those they are aware of, and nothing saves one from sins except general repentance, as it encompasses what the servant knows and what they do not know.

Examples of this include the Prophet (peace be upon him) asking his Lord to forgive him for what he did not know, and his supplication in prayer: "O Allah, forgive me my faults, my ignorance, my extravagance in my affairs, and what You know better than I," and his other supplication: "O Allah, forgive me all my sins, the small and the great, the unintentional and the intentional, the hidden and the manifest, the first and the last."

If a servant repents with a general repentance, it entails the forgiveness of all sins, even those they did not recall, unless, had they recalled them, they would not have repented due to their strong desire for them, or their belief that they were good and not evil.

Regarding the rights of human beings, these rights must be rendered to their owners. If one does not remember a particular sin but has repented with a general, sincere repentance, it is hoped that Allah will forgive them and satisfy their opponent in any way He wills on the Day of Resurrection.

If a penitent is unable to render rights to their owners due to forgetting them, and Allah knows that had they remembered them, they would have rendered them, then it is hoped from Allah's kindness and generosity that He will accept their repentance and satisfy their opponent.
