What is the ruling on an enema administered to a fasting patient?

Scholars differed on whether an enema breaks the fast. Some hold that it does break the fast because anything that reaches the internal cavity (jawf) breaks it. Others, like Ibn Taymiyyah, hold that it does not break the fast because it is neither eating nor drinking, nor similar to them in meaning. The preferred view is to refer to the opinion of doctors: if they state that it is like eating and drinking in terms of providing nourishment to the body, then it breaks the fast. If they state that it does not provide the body with what eating and drinking provide, then it does not break the fast.
