Does owning statues and dolls with spirits drawn on them lead one out of Islam, or is it merely a forbidden act?

Merely possessing statues and toys that bear images of animate beings does not lead one out of Islam unless they are worshipped. However, it is forbidden to possess statues of animate beings, and they must be destroyed or their features altered so that they no longer remain a complete image. This is based on the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: "Gabriel (peace be upon him) came to me and said: 'I came to you last night, and nothing prevented me from entering except that there were statues at the door, and there was a curtain with images in the house... So, command that the head of the statue in the house be cut off so that it becomes like the form of a tree, and command that the curtain be cut into two thrown-down cushions to be trodden upon.'" And Ali's statement to Abu al-Hayyaj al-Asadi: "I send you on the same mission the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent me: 'Do not leave any raised grave without leveling it, nor any statue without effacing it.'"
