Are the funds paid and received for discharge from the army due to a medical excuse considered lawful (halal)?
If the army is Islamic and aims to protect Islam and Muslims and strengthen their might, then it is not permissible for one upon whom service therein is incumbent to evade it. And resorting to deception, such as undergoing a surgical operation, is forbidden. However, if the army is not Islamic, then it is not permissible to remain in it. And it is permissible for one who is compelled to escape from it to undergo a surgical operation that causes no harm, or whose harm is less than the harm of remaining in the army, if that is necessary for escape. And if escape is possible through means that cause no harm, or that cause less harm than the operation, then it is not permissible to undertake the operation except out of actual necessity.
