Is expiation (kaffarah) obligatory for one who committed fornication during the daytime in Ramadan while not performing prayers, or is general repentance sufficient for him?
Adultery is forbidden and an abomination, both inside and outside of . Committing it in Ramadan is a greater sin. If the perpetrator was fasting, then he must offer the major expiation ( kubra): freeing a slave, or fasting for two consecutive months, or feeding sixty needy persons. If his abandonment of prayer was due to denying its obligation, then he is an apostate. If he repents and embraces Islam, he is not required to make up the missed prayers. However, if his abandonment of prayer was due to laziness, there is a difference of opinion regarding his apostasy. According to the view that he is an apostate, he is not required to offer expiation or make up the prayers. According to the view that he is not an apostate, he must offer expiation and make up what he missed, and this is the more cautious approach.
