The best practice after finishing a meal is to utter the words of praise (hamd) authentically reported from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, though it is permissible to use other, non-reported formulas. This is because the authentically reported (ma'thur) is superior, and it has been established that some of the righteous predecessors used certain non-reported formulas of praise after eating. The rule in these matters is that if an authentically reported ذكر (remembrance/supplication) is specifically established for a certain situation, then it is best to restrict oneself to it, while still permitting the use of non-reported forms.
