Did the Hadith of Mahram by Adult Breastfeeding come down before the verse ("and their weaning is in two years")?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

The noble verse (And We have enjoined upon man [care] for his parents. His mother carried him with hardship upon hardship, and his weaning is in two years) was revealed before the hadith about the suckling of Salim, the mawla of Abu Hudhayfa. The verse is Meccan, whereas the story of Salim occurred in Medina in the fifth year of the Hijra, after the revelation of Allah's saying: (Call them by [the names of] their fathers).

There is no contradiction between the verse and the hadith of Salim; for the verse speaks of a general ruling, and the story of Salim is a specific exception from this general ruling due to necessity. It is a concession for one who cannot do without entering upon a woman and for whom her veiling from him would be difficult, and it is not an abrogation or a specific ruling only for his person.
