Is it permissible for a translator to swear by other than Allah—such as by honor and integrity—for their translation to be officially recognized, and is the money earned from such a translation unlawful in this case, and what should be done with money earned previously?

Earning money from translation is permissible as long as the work itself is permissible. As for swearing by other than Allah, such as swearing by one's honor or integrity, it is not permissible and is considered among the polytheism of words (shirk al-alfaz). If the questioner is in need of working in a governmental institution that requires such an oath, it is permissible for him to take this oath by way of concession, intending thereby to affirm the statement, not to glorify the one sworn by. This depends on the view of those who consider such an oath disliked (makrooh) rather than forbidden (haram), which is the madhhab of the Malikis and Shafi'is. Oaths are divided into permissible (by Allah and His attributes), disliked (by other than Allah), and forbidden (by deities other than Allah). Swearing by a created being is disliked (makrooh) and not forbidden (haram) according to the Shafi'is.
