What is the ruling of Islamic law on dealing with the Internet and chat rooms, and what should I do if a young man I met online proposes to me, and I am unable to tell my family for fear of losing their trust?

It is not permissible to chat with young men online without a need. If there is a need, then it should be within the bounds of propriety, in accordance with the Almighty's saying: "Then do not be soft in speech, lest he in whose heart is disease should covet, but speak with appropriate words." These conversations have caused much corruption, so one must repent to Allah and sever ties with anyone met through the internet. If a man wishes to propose, he should approach the family directly, and the family should inquire about him, his religious commitment, and his character.
