The question

Is it permissible to buy an automatic washing machine for two orphans living with their maternal grandfather and aunt, using additional aid money received from charities, given that they have a monthly allowance, their grandfather's financial situation does not permit it, and the washing machine will help their aunt in caring for them and washing their clothes and the family's clothes?

The answer

First, it must be verified that both children are poor and eligible for assistance; otherwise, it is not permissible to accept it. If they are poor, then there is no objection to purchasing a washing machine with the assistance money for their needs. It is also permissible to use it to wash the clothes of their poor grandfather who cares for them, because he is the guardian of the poor and may consume of his orphan's wealth in a reasonable manner, as indicated by the verse: "And whoever is poor, let him consume thereof in a reasonable manner." It is likewise permissible to use it to wash the clothes of their aunt as long as she is caring for them and serving them.
