Is the name "Abd al-Muttalib" forbidden, and should a suitor be rejected because of it?

It is not permissible to be named with any name that indicates servitude to other than Allah. However, the existence of a name with a legal impediment should not be a reason to reject a suitor, especially if he is a person of good character and religious commitment. The issue of the name is easy to resolve, and it is advisable to change it in the future if possible. It is worth noting that the prohibition of being named Abd al-Muttalib is not a matter of consensus among scholars. Ibn Hazm excluded it from what was unanimously forbidden among all names indicating servitude to other than Allah the Almighty. Ibn al-Qayyim mentioned that the Prophet’s (peace be upon him) statement: "I am the son of Abd al-Muttalib" was a matter of reporting a known name, not a matter of creating a naming, and that the scope of reporting is wider than the scope of creating. Nevertheless, changing it if possible is more preferable and safer.
