What is the ruling regarding shoes if they step on a spot where a dog has passed on ground wet with rainwater? And is the staircase purified by merely pouring water, or by seven washes? And does the narration of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) removing a small dog and pouring water in its place serve as an argument for the purification of a dog by merely pouring water?

Many scholars have adopted the view that the outer part of a dog is pure (tahir), and this is a strong opinion that there is no harm in adopting. According to this view, its passing does not render the ground impure. Even if one were to assume it becomes impure, the ground can be purified by pouring water over it, without the need for rubbing with earth or washing seven times. Many scholars also believe that the ground is purified by dryness, and this is a strong and respected opinion. It is permissible to adopt the easier opinion, especially for those who suffer from obsessive doubts (waswas).
