Does the Hadith of Uqbah ibn al-Harith indicate that a single suckle prohibits, and how can it be reconciled with other Ahadith that refer to five suckles? And is prohibition adopted merely by doubt about the occurrence or number of suckles?

Scholars differ on the number of sucklings that establish prohibitive kinship (mahramiyya) across several opinions:

Some hold that both few and many sucklings are equal in establishing prohibition. They base their argument on the unqualified nature of the Noble Quran and the prophetic tradition, "What is prohibited by lineage is prohibited by suckling," as well as the story of 'Uqba ibn al-Harith, in which the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, did not inquire about the number of sucklings.

Others maintain that prohibition is not established unless there are three sucklings or more, relying on the traditions, "A single suckle and two suckles do not prohibit."

As for the third opinion, which is the most preferred, it states that prohibition is not established with less than five sucklings. Their evidence includes the hadith of 'Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, "Among what was revealed in the Quran were ten known sucklings that establish prohibition, then they were abrogated by five known sucklings," and the Prophet's command, peace and blessings be upon him, to Sahla bint Suhayl to suckle Salim five times. This opinion holds that the hadiths which negate prohibition with one or two sucklings qualify the general statements in the Quran.
