Is it obligatory to respect an older or younger brother, and is respecting elders in general obligatory or recommended?

A brother by lineage, whether older or younger, has a right to kindness and maintaining ties. The older brother has a right to respect and honor, especially if he is righteous. It is mentioned in the حديث (Hadith) that "The eldest among brothers is in the position of a father," and what is meant is the eldest in faith and knowledge, then in age. The Sharia also commanded showing respect to elders in general. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "He is not one of us who does not have mercy on our young and does not respect our elders." There is no explicit text from the scholars regarding whether respecting elders is obligatory or merely recommended.
