What is understood is that revering them is recommended (mustahabb), with its recommendation being emphasized. The reverence for elders has been coupled with enjoining good and forbidding evil, which suggests their obligation. The standard of etiquette in this regard is to treat a person in a manner befitting them, while observing customs that do not contravene Islamic law, such as making space for them in an assembly, so that the elder is given their due right of honor and reverence.
