Is the decision to break off an engagement to a fiancée—who, along with her mother, cannot tolerate the fiancé's mother and constantly misunderstands her—a sound decision that is pleasing to Allah, one's mother, and one's conscience, or is it an injustice?

The mother's right is great; it ranks second only to the right of Allah. Her right takes precedence over that of the wife, children, and father if her right conflicts with theirs. Dissolving an engagement is permissible, and it might even be preferable if there is a fear that the mother's right will be neglected because of the fiancée, lest one be compelled to divorce her later.
