Is it permissible for a Muslim to demolish a mosque in order to expand his adjacent factory, provided that a replacement mosque is built elsewhere, and what is the correct stance regarding this?

Demolishing a mosque without an overriding benefit is a heinous sin, and its perpetrator must rebuild it. The Shafi'is hold that it must be restored to its previous state, while the Malikis hold that the value of the demolished mosque wall is due, with the land remaining as an endowment. The Hanafis, however, believe that whoever demolishes a mosque wall is commanded to level and repair it. The appropriate course of action is to refer the matter to the ruler or the administration concerned with mosque affairs.
